Windows Vista : Make it go Faster!
You can make Vista a bit faster by turning off some apps and things which you wont really use.
Vista Sidebar — Lose it
The Windows Vista Sidebar a very cool eye-candy but is it really useful? to some of us maybe, but if you rarely use it it’s better to turn it off, plus it adds to your desktop real-estate. For each Sidebar gadget you use your computer consumes system resources, so either trim back what you use to a minimum or go one step further and switch it off completely. Right-click the sidebar and choose Properties. Untick “Start the Sidebar when Windows starts” and click OK, then right-click again and this time choose Close Sidebar.
Disable the Transparent Effects of Windows Aero
The Transparent Effects of Windows Aero consumes a whole lot of resources and processing power. Switch it off without disabling Windows Aero by right-clicking the desktop and choosing Personalize, then click Window Colour and Appearance and uncheck Enable Transparency and click OK.
Tone down Windows Vista’s Visual Effects
To tone down Windows Vista’s visual effects Click Start then right-click My Computer and select Properties. Click Advanced System Settings and click Settings under Performance. When your on the Visual Effects tab select Adjust for best performance to disable everything, or click Custom to disable individual effects. Click OK to close it and apply the changes and your all set.
Customize your Start Menu
Customizing your Start Menu without the help of third party software is ok in my book so do a right-click on the Start button and select Properties. Click on Customize, and make your Start menu speak “you” settings which are very comfortable and easy to access.
Start Menu — Using Run
Pressing the Windows key + R brings up the Run dialog from there you can type in anything from web addresses to folder locations, programs and utilities for a more cooler way to access them and a lot more quicker too.
The Address Bar — Use it Wisely
The Address bar works a lot like the Run dialog so make the best of it you know the drill, right-click the Taskbar and choose Toolbars and then select Address and your all set to type away…
Automatic Hibernation — IF you not Using it Shut it Off
During Hibernation, it may seem the that computer is off but actually it still runs constantly in the background and that in turn leads up to the constant use of resources. From it’s first state which is Sleep, then on deep sleelp it goes into Hiberation like animals do on winter. Instead hibernating, just switch it off, and for laptop users turning off Automatic Hibernation saves up precious battery power too. here’s how to do it, fire up the Control Panel, select System and Maintenance and click “Change when the computer sleeps”. Set “Put the computer to sleep” to Never and click Save changes.
Remote Differential Compression –Not Networked then turn this OFF
Unless you move files around your network on a regular basis, this feature can be safely switched off. Open Control Panel and select Programs. Choose Turn Windows features on and off, untick Remote Differential Compression and click OK.
Network Printer Search — Turn it OFF
Not sharing printers, or just greedy( hehehe) then turn it off to speed things up. Click Start then type network and sharing center. On the Network and Sharing center look for Printer Sharing, select Turn off printer sharing then clicking Apply.
User Account Control — Turn Off your UAC
check out my post here for ways to disable the UAC
Readyboost — use it
Change Windows Vista’s default recommended settings, by firing up My Computer then right-click your flash drive, choose Properties and switch to the ReadyBoost tab.
Control Panel — Make Shortcuts
Make shortcuts of frequently used Control Panel Applets for easier faster access. Open your “classic” Control Panel (switch to Classic View) . Right-click the Control Panel you want to shortcut to and choose Create Shortcut.
By then a new shortcut will magically appear on the desktop either drag it to the Quick Launch Toolbar or on the Start menu which ever is easier for you.
The Windows Key
The Windows key is an important but rarely used keyboard shortcut tool. Such as Windows key plus number 1-0 to access the Quick Launch toolbar shortcuts.
Automatic Defragmentation — Turn it OFF
When the Defragmenter is running your PC may experience slowdown, so it’s best to make a Manual Defrag Schedule. Turn off Automatic Defragmentation by unchecking “Run on a Schedule (recommended)”. Then Pick a time that’s best when the PC is idle and your not using it.
Then which goes to the next scene which is
Please Defrag Your Hard Drive
Since you turned off the Automatic Defragmentation it’s up to you to keep vigil, and defrag your harddrive to keep the file system neat and tidy and to help it load quicker, to speed up your PC.
